How do you tell a successful horror story?

You should start with very innocent looking cute things going on. then out of nowhere, a twisted gory thing happen that is believable by the way. unbelievable things are not so scary. it has to be inescapable and happens in unexpected time for innocent kind and lovely heros. but the hero always escapes almost but not for his/her loved ones.
