Searching for life on mars?

How much if any would it change our lives ether way. If NASA came out today and said they found something live or dead how would we know without any question that it really is true? That they truly retrieved it from another planet or they grew it in a lab somewhere. I think we put to much faith in what we are told by people with their own agendas and ask for little or no proof.
